David Caplin, born in Malmö, Sweden and living in the UK for 25 years, started the company in 2007. David, who enjoys a passion for Scandinavian food, lifestyle and culture, is keen to share the best of the Scandinavian countries with the UK, making products available, which once sampled are not easily forgotten.

Distinctly Scandinavia has forged a special partnership with the renowned smokehouse, Vägga Rökeri which produces smoked and cured salmon for the Swedish market.

Vägga (pronounced Vega) Smokehouse is located in Karlshamn, southern Sweden, by the Fishing Harbour, overlooking the sea and the Blekinge Archipelago with its wonderful landscape and boats.

50 years experience in salmon smoking

Ingemar Martinsson, founder of Vägga Rökeri, started his career in the salmon business at the beginning of the 1950s in Mörrum, close to where he was born, in the Blekinge countryside.

During the 1960s, Ingemar worked in Stockholm with Sweden's leading and most distinguished delicatessen, Arvid Nordqvist H.A.B, which opened in Stockholm in 1884 and sold products from all over the world. Ingemar ran the smokehouse owned by Arvid Nordqvist and among the distinguished customers were The Swedish Royal Family, the Royal Opera House (Operakällaren) and the Grand Hotel in Stockholm. It was after a long and successful period in Stockholm, that Ingemar in 1975 decided to move on and returned to his hometown to start up his own smokehouse.

Vägga Rökeri - the smokehouse today

In 1993, Ingemar started Vägga Rökeri which has over the years grown from strength to strength . Today, Vägga Rökeri is a very strong, successful brand representing quality and tradition and has now established a dynamic working partnership with Distinctly Scandinavia Ltd for the international market. The Double Hot Smoked Salmon, which can be found at Waitrose, is our first big launch of something very special with other products to follow soon.
